The beginning of beach volleyball takes us back to 1920-1924 to Santa Monica, California. That’s the most likely place of its origin. Some treats beach volleyball as a ‘younger sister’ of Volleyball. At the early stage, matches were played by the teams of six players each side. It was in 1930 when the game changed to two players. It was for quite funny reason of only two players showing for a game. It was also that year, when beach volleyball appeared in Europe, for a few decades as a recreational sport. In 1960 after a tournament held in France, beach volleyball became a prestigious sport in Europe.
Beach volleyball was accepted as an Olympic sport and had its ‘premiere’ when it was demonstrated for the first time in 1992 during the Olympic Games in Barcelona. Four years later in Atlanta beach volleyball became one of the competitions and the teams were fighting for the medals.
Nowadays beach volleyball is becoming less beach and more metropolitan game. Sand fields are being built for the needs of various tournaments in the city centres. There are some contraventions around it, some moral objectives to the uniforms, but the game itself is getting more and more popular. It is often associated with a relaxing beach-centric lifestyle, similar to the surfing culture.
