For the absolutely newbies, let’s start from the basics :-]
In traditional Indoor Volleyball, there are six players per team. Every single of them starts the game in the specific location. There are front row/ front court players and back row/ back court players.
Additionally there is left, middle and right player for both – front row and back row. This gives us six unique positions:
The above are locations ( the place on the court) not positions (your position/role within the team).
In terms of the positions we have: setter, middle player/blocker, outside hitter, opposite and libero.
What the players can do? Front row players are responsible for blocking, hitting and setting a ball- offensive. Back row players take care of the mainly defence – digging & making sure the ball doesn’t hit the ground. They may also attack/hit as long as they take off for the jump not crossing the front line.
After every rally, the team which have gained a serve must rotate clockwise – one location forward. You cannot switch the position ( to the one you play at, for the example middle) before the serve is contacted, if you do- your team will lose a point. Even if you don’t switch, but somehow are in the wrong location before the ball is served – your team may lose a point (if the referee will spot this).
Observe Who is Next To You
You must always watch the players who are in the location next to you- both sides. Make sure you stay behind the front row player when you are supposed to be back and you are on the left side of player that should be at your right etc. To make it easier – let’s say that you are in the back middle location- you must be on the left side of the back right player, on the right side of the back left player and behind the front row players. It only sounds confusing, but it’s really not that complicated J
These rules must be followed every time when one of the team is serving. Otherwise you may be called for so called ‘overlap’ and give the point to the opposite team.
Always Watch Your Partner
When you fell lost and are not sure where you should be – always watch your ‘partner’. If you play middle, you should be exactly opposite to the middle player. You always mirror each other. When you stay back left and you are middle player, the other middle player will be front right and so on. You are always in the same position in relation to other team mates.
Each game can be started in whichever position, but the rules above must be followed- all of the players must be in the same spot in relation to each other.
ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT LOCATION! When confused- ask your team mates or watch your mirror player.
